The Kids in The VO Booth
On this date in 1988, the sketch comedy television series, The Kids in the Hall, debuted in Canada on CBC. Edited to be less religiously offensive, The Kids in the Hall skits aired in the US on CBS and HBO between 1989 and 1995. This uproarious show was in many ways the Great White North version of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The cast featured comedians Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. These five versatile actors played virtually every character in the show, including the female characters. In fact, cross-dressing routines became a trademark of the show. So, it is no surprise that Kevin McDonald was cast to play the cross-dressing alien, Agent Pleakley, in the Disney’s Lilo and Stitch.
Each of the five Kids in the Hall could be referred to as Kids in the in the VO Booth as each of them has supplemented their on-camera careers with voice-over roles. Some examples: In addition to playing Agent Pleakley, McDonald has voiced numerous TV animated characters; Foley
voiced Flik Car in Disney’s 2006 animated feature, Cars; McKinney was the narrator in Beyond Corner Gas: Tales from Dog River; Thompson voiced lead character Buddy Cole in the animated TV series Buddy’s; and McCulloch provided the voice of Pixley Pleakley in an episode of Lilo and Stitch the Animated Series. This episode was actually a reunion of sorts for the Kids in the Hall; each of them played a role. Along with McCulloch as Pixley and McDonald in his signature VO role, Agent Pleakly, McKinney played Bertley Pleakley, Thompson voiced Pleakley’s mother, and Foley made an appearance as the Priest. Lilo would call this “Ohana,” the Kids in the Hall family coming together as a VO family for one more hilarious skit.
