What’s up Doc?

Happy 70th birthday to that beloved wascally wabbit, Bugs Bunny! It was on this day in 1940 that the first Bugs Bunny short was released in theaters. The classic spot was written by Rich Hogan, directed by Tex Avery, animated by Virgil Ross, and voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc (Bugs) and Arthur Q. Bryan (Elmer Fudd).

While Bugs’ debut is a really great short, my favorite Bugs episode has to be the Rabbit of Seville. It’s the perfect combination of cartoon animation and musical composition (Gioachino Rossini ‘s The Barber Of Seville) so, despite the lack of voice characterizations (until the very end), I still think it is the best Bugs Bunny short every produced. What’s your favorite Bugs short?

    Excellent post, as ever!

The Rabbit of Seville might just be one of my favories too. It shows up – still – all over the place. I’ve heard it referred to by a cousin “You’re next, you’re so next” and in Car and Driver, when talking about a certain automaker’s seat adjusting mechanism.

I wish my hair would grow like Bugs gets Elmer’s to do… just a little sprinkle out of the bottle. The choreography! Flowers right when you don’t expect them, or do you?

Of course, The Rabbit of Seville is up there with Rebel Rabbit, there’s the episode with Blacke Jacke Shellacque (sp?), maybe it’s time for a Kevinsvoice poll!

Thanks for the great work Kevin!
